Unclog a Drain Without Harsh Chemicals

Water sitting in the sink or shower? Most clogs clear with a few cheap tools and no chemicals. Start with the easiest method and work down.

Skip harsh chemicals for now

Chemical drain cleaners can damage pipes, and if they don't work you're left with a sink full of caustic water that's dangerous to plunge. Try the mechanical methods below first. If you've already used a chemical cleaner, don't plunge; wear gloves and eye protection, and call a plumber if it hasn't cleared.

FIXTry these in order

Most clogs clear by step 3.

Bathroom sinks and showers are usually blocked by hair just below the stopper.

  • Lift or unscrew the stopper and clean off any gunk.
  • Push a cheap plastic drain snake (a barbed strip, also called a hair catcher tool) down the drain, twist and pull out the hair. A bent wire coat hanger with a small hook works too.

For greasy kitchen clogs, pour a kettle of hot, not boiling water down slowly. Boiling water can soften plastic (PVC) pipes and crack porcelain, so never pour it into a toilet.

  • Use a cup plunger (flat) for sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger (with a sleeve on the bottom) for toilets.
  • Make sure there's enough water to cover the plunger's cup.
  • Block the overflow hole (and the other drain of a double sink) with a wet cloth, so the pressure goes down the clog.
  • Push down gently first, then plunge firmly up and down 10–15 times, keeping the seal.
  1. Put a bucket and towel under the U-shaped pipe (the trap).
  2. Unscrew the two large nuts by hand (or with pliers) and remove the trap.
  3. Empty and clean it, check the pipe going into the wall, then reassemble and hand-tighten. Run water to check for leaks.

A hand-cranked drain auger (plumber's snake) reaches clogs further down. Feed it in, crank when you feel resistance to break up or grab the clog, then pull it back out and flush with water. Toilets need a toilet auger, which has a guard to protect the bowl.

For drains that are slow rather than blocked, an enzyme-based drain cleaner gently breaks down organic build-up overnight and is safer for pipes. Baking soda and vinegar is mild and can freshen drains, but rarely clears a real blockage.

🚰
Flowing again.

A hair catcher over shower drains and keeping grease out of the kitchen sink prevents most clogs.

Still blocked?

If several drains are slow at once, or water backs up into other fixtures, the main sewer line may be blocked. That needs a plumber.

FAQCommon questions

Is it OK to pour cooking grease down the sink?

No. It cools and sticks to pipes. Let it set, then put it in the trash.

Do chemical drain cleaners damage pipes?

They can, especially older metal pipes and with repeated use. They're also hazardous to skin and eyes. Mechanical methods are safer.

Why are several drains slow at the same time?

That points to a blockage further down the main line rather than in one sink. Call a plumber.

Does baking soda and vinegar unclog drains?

It fizzes, but it rarely clears a real clog. A plunger or drain snake works much better.
