How to Repair Drywall

Doorknob dents, picture-hook holes, or a full-on fist-sized hole: here's how to patch any size so nobody can tell it was ever there.

Measure the hole, then pick your fix

Hole sizeFixTime
Nail holes, dents, small dingsSpackle only (step 1)30 min
Up to about 4 in (10 cm), like a doorknob holeSelf-adhesive mesh patch (step 2)1–2 days with drying

All three are well within reach for a first-timer. The secret to an invisible repair is thin coats and patient sanding.

REPAIRFix the hole

Do the step that matches your hole, then steps 4 and 5.

  1. Brush away loose bits of paper and dust.
  2. Press lightweight spackle into the hole with a putty knife (a fingertip works for nail holes), and scrape it level with the wall.
  3. Let it dry: usually 15–30 minutes, or as the tub says. Many turn from pink to white when dry.

Popped nail? Drive a drywall screw 1–2 inches above it to hold the board, tap the nail back in, then spackle over both.

  1. Trim any loose or torn paper around the hole with a utility knife.
  2. Stick a self-adhesive mesh patch over the hole, at least an inch bigger than the hole on every side.
  3. Spread joint compound over it with a 6-inch knife in a crisscross pattern, extending a few inches past the patch and feathering the edges thin.
  4. Let it dry (up to 24 hours), sand lightly, and apply a second, wider, thinner coat. Repeat once more if the patch still shows.
Safety first: use a stud finder to check for wires and pipes behind the wall, and turn off power to that area at the breaker before cutting.
  1. Draw a neat square around the damage with a carpenter's square, and cut it out with a drywall saw.
  2. Screw two strips of scrap wood or plywood inside the hole, against the back of the wall, so they stick out above and below the opening.
  3. Cut a new piece of drywall the same thickness to fit, and screw it to the strips (keep screws at least 1 inch from the edges).
  4. Cover the seams with fiberglass mesh tape, then spread two or three thin coats of joint compound, sanding between coats once each is dry.
  • Use fine-grit sandpaper (about 120–220) on a sanding block, with light, circular strokes.
  • Shine a flashlight across the wall at a low angle: shadows reveal bumps and dips you can't otherwise see.
  • Wear a dust mask, and wipe the dust off with a damp cloth or tack cloth.
  1. Apply primer over the repair. Without it, patched areas absorb paint differently and look dull or “flashy”.
  2. When dry, paint with the wall's colour. Feather the paint out past the patch with a roller, not a brush, to match the texture.

No leftover paint? Take a chip of the wall (from inside a closet, or a cover plate area) to a paint store to have it colour-matched.

🧱
Good as new.

Keep the leftover compound sealed; it's handy for future dings.

Patch still shows?

Usually it needs one more thin, wider coat of compound, feathered further out, then sand and prime again. If several patches stand out, repainting the whole wall gives the most even finish.

FAQCommon questions

What's the difference between spackle and joint compound?

Spackle dries fast and shrinks little: ideal for small holes. Joint compound (drywall mud) spreads more easily over larger areas and is used with tape and patches.

Do I really need to prime before painting?

Yes, for anything bigger than a nail hole. Fresh compound soaks up paint differently, leaving a dull patch that shows.

How long does joint compound take to dry?

Usually up to 24 hours per coat; thick coats, cool or humid rooms take longer. Quick-setting “hot mud” powders set in 5–90 minutes.

Can I patch drywall without the wood strips?

For holes up to about 4–6 inches, a self-adhesive mesh or metal patch is enough. Bigger holes need backing so the new piece doesn't flex.

The wall is textured. How do I match it?

Hardware stores sell spray-can textures (orange peel and knockdown). Practise on cardboard first.
