Where's My Refund? Check Your Tax Refund Status
Filed your taxes and waiting on the money? The IRS has a free tracker that shows exactly where your federal refund is. Here's how to use it, what the statuses mean, how long refunds usually take, and how to check your state refund.
Have these three things ready
- Your Social Security number or ITIN
- Your filing status (single, married filing jointly, and so on)
- The exact refund amount in whole dollars, from your return
Then go to irs.gov/wheres-my-refund and choose the tax year. It's free, and it's the same information an IRS phone agent would see.
Filed for an extension on your 2025 return? Your deadline to file is October 15, 2026. An extension gave you more time to file, not to pay.
WHENWhen will my refund come?
This is an estimate based on the IRS's published guidance, not a promise. Errors, identity checks, debts or extra review can make any refund take longer. Where's My Refund has your real status.
STATUSWhat the statuses mean
Where's My Refund and the IRS2Go app show a progress bar with three stages. It updates once a day, usually overnight, so there's no need to check more often.
Return Received
The IRS has your return and is processing it. Nothing is wrong; this is often the longest stage.
Refund Approved
Your refund is approved. The tool shows the date the IRS expects to send it.
Refund Sent
It's on its way to your bank or in the mail. Banks can take a few days to post it, and don't post on weekends or holidays.
HOWTrack your refund step by step
Start with step 1. Most people have their answer by step 2.
Checking too early just gives an error. Status is available:
- 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return
- 3 days after you e-file a prior-year return
- 4 weeks after you mail a paper return
- 3 weeks after you file an amended return (Form 1040-X), using the separate Where's My Amended Return tool
- Go to irs.gov/wheres-my-refund and click Check your refund.
- Choose the tax year, then enter your SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact refund amount.
- Read your stage and any message under it.
- IRS2Go is the IRS's free official app for iPhone and Android. Tap Refund Status and enter the same details. If a paper check is lost, single, head-of-household and married-filing-separately filers can also start a refund trace in the app.
- Your IRS Individual Online Account shows refund status, amended return status, payments and notices in one place. It's also where you add bank details if the IRS asks for them.
State refunds come from your state's tax department, not the IRS, and run on their own timetable.
- Search for your state's department of revenue or taxation (the address ends in .gov), or use USA.gov's list of state tax agencies.
- Look for a Where's my refund or Check refund status link. Most ask for your SSN and the exact state refund amount.
A handful of states have no state income tax, so there's no state refund to track there.
- Common causes: a math error or missing signature, claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit (EITC refunds are held by law until at least mid-February), an injured spouse claim, or identity checks.
- Smaller than expected? Your refund may have been reduced to pay past-due taxes, child support, federal debts or state tax. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service mails a notice explaining any offset.
- No bank details on your return? The IRS is phasing out paper refund checks. It sends a letter (CP53E) asking you to add bank information through your Online Account. If you don't respond, it releases a paper check after about six weeks.
- When to call: only if it's been more than 21 days since you e-filed, more than 6 weeks since you mailed your return, or the tool tells you to contact the IRS. The automated refund line is 800-829-1954. Calling earlier won't speed things up.
- If your refund is badly delayed and causing financial hardship, the free, independent Taxpayer Advocate Service may be able to help.
- If you used a tax preparer, ask them to confirm your return was accepted and that the refund amount and bank details are right.
FAQCommon questions
How long does a tax refund take?
The IRS says most e-filed returns are refunded within about 3 weeks (21 days). Paper returns take 6 weeks or more from when the IRS receives them. Amended returns usually take 8 to 12 weeks, and sometimes up to 16.
Will calling the IRS speed up my refund?
No. Phone agents see the same information as Where's My Refund. Only call if it's been over 21 days since e-filing, over 6 weeks since mailing, or the tool tells you to.
Why does the tool say my information doesn't match?
Check that you've entered the exact refund amount from your return in whole dollars, the right filing status and the right tax year. If you only just filed, wait 24 hours (e-file) or 4 weeks (paper).
How often does Where's My Refund update?
Once a day, usually overnight. Checking several times a day won't show anything new.
Is the October 15 deadline for everyone?
No. October 15, 2026 is the deadline for people who requested an extension on their 2025 return. If you didn't get an extension, your return was due in April. Some disaster areas get extra time; check IRS.gov for your area.
Does a refund check still come in the mail?
The IRS is phasing out paper refund checks in favor of direct deposit. If you didn't give bank details, the IRS sends a letter asking for them, and releases a paper check after about six weeks if you don't respond and there are no other problems.
